Sedna Disscussion

Dylan Brady

English III

In the myth “Sedna” it shows how corruption can overpower two men through the power of a young lady. The Indian tribes belive that they must must please her with sacred ceremonies so they may live in peace and harmony and be able to obtain food and water. Sedna’s dad was a rather harsh character only looking out for himself and making sure he survives. This myth is more along the lines of secretion myth for Sedna’s fingers get cut off and create sea life, such as walruses and seals. Senya was quite an interesting myth to learn and read about.

Caught by a Hairstring Disscussion

Dylan Brady

English III

In the myth “Caught by a Hairstring” the two main characters show some evidence of fantastical emotion, while being what it seemed like almost controlled by the girls given to the two men by and old women the men met in the forest. The myth appeared to be a creation myth, because the teo men try to create a new life for the two young ladies. Finally when the old women comes and gives the man the head piece to marry the women, this is fantastical evidence.  These myths are rather unusual in design, however, give a lot of evidence of occurring themes and emotions.

Chelan Disscussion

Dylan Brady

English III

In the myth “Chelan” the myth starts with all the kingdoms of animals coming together in one place. The main god of them all was them all was the great chief, or the creator, who had overwhelming power of immunity and never died. There are forms of anthropomorphism because all of the animals in the worlds can talk to each other. The power was given to the four wolf brothers, who planned to kill beaver, the main “artifact” in the myth and uses his body to create humans. They were suppose to spread the body into twelve parts, but could only make eleven.

Yokut Review

Dylan Brady

English III

In the myth “Yokut” there are many forms of anthropomorphism and historic context, and the belief system of the native Americans is also explained in this myth. Anthropomorphism is shown as eagle and crow talked to duck and each other about creating the new world and how they almost have human characteristics.over the extended period of time however this cosmogonic myth has turned into a source of entertainment for most readers. The dual creation myth however, was thoroughly trusted and worshiped as truth.

Emergence Review

Dylan Brady

English III

In the myth “The Emergence” one of the main factors shown is the number four. The number four is a factor that shows praise to the divine and a real spiritual significance to a native American culture. In the myth, examples are shown since the beginning when it describes the four kinds of insects. In the first world. As they decide to leave their world for another better and more equipped one, or the second world. This world  was occupied by four kinds of birds and insects moved to the third world or the natural world with humans and such. All creatures lived together in harmony. The number four in this case is the main reason why the world was created to answer the question for native American society.

                                                            Racism in Avatar

In the movie “Avatar”, racism is show everywhere according to a discussion on the Washington post about the signs seen by viewers who were rather disturbed about this movies point of view about Native American people and the white people.“Think of it this way. Avatar is a fantasy about ceasing to be white, giving up the old human meatsack to join the blue people, but never losing white privilege."(Courtland Milloy 1)  The point of view discusses the extermination of a native tribe for the sake of money and power on the white man’s planet. This is the main topic that upset viewers, and things such as images closely related to Native Americans, and showing the white man as the evil that destroys all life that is peaceful around them. These themes are good examples of how most critics would be upset with the movie “Avatar”

The first theme to discuss would be the theme of racial differences in “Avatar”. Most points view of Native Americans were people who were kept as peaceful and one with the earth and nature, which is exactly the same in this movie.  The white man is the antagonist who comes and ruins the land of the Native Americans, and is known for abusing the Native Americans. Jake Sully, a marine in the USMC is assigned to become part of the Avatar and make them move from their current location to other so the humans can mine under their location to get rich, but the avatar don’t want to move at all, and refuse to. "Sully has the power to choose between being a dominating Sky Person or a Na'vi victim, which in the end yields greater power -- the audience's empathy. Only white men are privileged enough to have such choices." (Courtland Milloy 1).  These points of views are some that people saw about the white men going up against the Avatar.

“The next point of view I would want to make would be the proving evidence of naitive American tribe members in the movie. One such post would be on their clothing and hair styles. You can tell some cat people are Native Americans, for instance, because, as Newitz describes them, they "wear feathers in their hair, worship nature gods, paint their faces for war, use bows and arrows, and live in tribes."

In addition to Native Americans, I saw some cat people as black people in disguise. This racial effect is cleverly accomplished by using certain speech patterns and body language. One cat man spoke with a West Indian accent, for instance.” (Courtland Milloy 1).

This quote shows the evidence of mankind vs the native American tribe, as the director was trying to portray the Native Americans as a more alien form, but he did get his inspiration overall from these people.

Overall, the evidence of a Native American relation going up against the feared white man is very standard for these types of movie genres. In my opinion, the reason they do this is to give you that point of view from the Native’s side, not to be raciest. These points and quotes do though, prove that the movie “Avatar” could be viewed as racist.

Personal creation Myth

Dylan Brady

9/3/12

English III honors

A long time ago, one man lived in the heavens. His name was George, who had an unusual skill in drawing and painting. He lived in the clouds and only had a stencil, paints, and a pencil.  One day, he had an idea to draw a companion of his own, someone George could share his problems and talk with. So he attempted to draw the most beautiful women in his eyes that he could create within his drawing abilities. He spent a full two days attempting to draw the beautiful women, who he decided to name Skyier. As George put the finishing touches on his beautiful work of art, he was tired and went to take a nap. An hour passed when he was awakened by such an unusual light in the clouds. George got up and explored the situation. To his surprise, this girl, that looked almost like the drawing he started on. He went to talk to her and she said “I am trying to find my way home, and I have no idea how I got here, would you mind helping me find my way back home?”George, now knowing this is his true companion says “This landscape here, beneath us, the one that is so barren and bland, this can be OUR world!” George, hoping Skyier would agree, did, and the two stayed together, working on their new world.

George, who worked almost nonstop trying to figure out what to create, was working on creating humans, animals and flying creatures. Skier, who had a very peculiar ability to make plants and vegetation grow with every step she took on the fertile soil, walked all across the earth, giving birth to the first trees and plants. Centuries past as the two worked continuously on the new world, the first animals created were the elephants, ants , tigers and rats who were to live on the surface. And hawks, who roamed and ruled the skies of this new world.

The couple realized that in order to send the sea life down to the world, they needed a liquid source so the real life could be maintained. The George and Skier though about what to do, but didn’t even know where to start. The couple eventually exhausted, went to sleep, and hoped they could think of something in the morning.

When George woke up that morning, he had a creative idea on how to add a sufficient amount of water; he woke up and realized that the water was starting to fill from the rain they had created. George thought that in order to fill the oceans with water, it must rain for years and years to come. So for centuries it rained upon the new world until the water was completely filled. The Sun was shining like a match in the darkness, evaporating all the puddles and marshes from the land.

After years of preparation and enhancements to the new world. George asked his wife something very important; “What do you think of this new world, what should we name it? For the world is getting too old for us to call it NEW world.” Skier laughed and said “Well we could take the first letter of each of the first animals that we have created; E-A-R-T-H- Earth right?” George replies with enthusiasm “That’s perfect!” and so the couple lived on the planet Earth for the rest of their life caring for it with a passion. Creating more and more diverse and advanced forms of life, or what we call in the present time, Evolution.
